BELLRINGERS RALLY
TO HEAR GREAT CARILLON Thirteen hundred bellringers from 25 counties attended a rally at the Croydon bell foundry of Messrs. Gillett and Johnston to see and hear the world’s largest carillon, that of 53 bells which has just been completed at the foundry for the Canadian Parliament buildings, Ottawa. Some of the party travelled all night to be present. M. Kamiel Lefevere, the Malines carilloneur, and others gave recitals and afterwards many of the ringers present tried their expert hands on the bells of Croydon Parish Chprch and St. Peter’s Church.
One of the ringers was Mr. F. F. Dawe, a Londoner, who claims to have rung the bells of 900 churches in all parts of the country, including those of every abbey cathedral, and minster in England. Mr. Dawe has been ringing for nearly 50 years. The bells of Coventry Cathedral he first rang 40 years ago, and he believes them to be one of the finest sets in the country. The 10 bells are now being recast at the works of Gillett and Johnston, and, with four others, are to be rehung in time for the Easter services.
