MANUKAU COUNTY

PAVING OF SOUTH ROAD HIGHWAYS BOARD GRANT The monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council was held this morning, the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. A lengthy discussion resulted on the question of the payment of the salary of a joint traffic inspector for the Papatoetoe and Manurewa Town Boards, the Otahuhu Borough Council and the County Council. It was eventually decided that the council’s contribution to the cost be made out of the county funds and not be a charge on the ridings. The report of the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, stated that good progress had been made with the concreting of the Great South Road. On the Papatoe-toe-Manurewa section all the paving had been laid with the exception of the nine chains, completion of which was deferred until next summer. • This length was now carrying traffic, with the exception of a short length south of Wiri Bridge, which will be opened on May 18. On the Manurewa-Papa-kura section a total length of 160 chains has been laid in concrete, of which the greater part is in use. In response to application by the county, the Main Highways Board had authorised the payment of an amount of £5,000 toward the paving of the Great South Road, this sum, with the £4,000 already received, making a grant of £9,000 to date. However, the £5,000 had not yet come to hand. It was therefore agreed to send a strongly-worded wire to the board with reference to its delay in forwarding the grant. The engineer remarked that the board’s inaction in the matter had resulted in temporary financial embarrassment to the council.

The building inspector’s report showed that the total value of building permits issued for the year ending March 31 was £112,253. On the motion of the chairman the county clerk was instructed to get in touch with the Marine Department with a view to the collection of dues

for the upkeep of Maraetai Wharf, an expense borne at present by the countv funds.
