OIL FUNCTIONS

The oil in the engine has three distinct functions to perform in order that the greatest motor efficiency be obtained:—(l) To reduce friction to a minimum. (2) To form piston seals. (3) To dissipate extreme engine heats without breaking down or thinning out under the task. * * * No matter how closely the piston rings hug the cylinder walls and no matter how fine the carburettor adjustment, it is humanlj r impossible to prevent the unburned petrol vapours from leaking past the piston rings, where they condense and flow into the crankcase to dilute the main supply of oil. * * * Crankcase dilution reduces the lubrication quality of the oil, causing excess friction with rapid wear and loss of power. Pistons become loose, rings need replacement, cylinders require reboring, and the life of the entire engine is shortened by dilution. If the ammeter hand stands at zero when the engine is running and lamps are burning it indicates that the generator is producing exactly the amount of current that the lamps are consuming.

When the horn of his car goes dumb the average motorist usually starts to pull it to pieces, or takes it along to the garage man. Next time you strike trouble of this sort try this action first: Get someone to hold the button down while you lightly tap the horn with a spanner. More often than not this slight shock will give the horn its lost voice. Often, too. the armature spindle may need a little oil.
