Strange Occurrence Reported in Spain
Whole Hill Subsides Into Bottomless Pit A curious incident is reported from the village of Lafrontera, in the province of Cuenca. Shepherds in a field heard a noise like a thunderclap and saw the crest of a hillock, covered with olive trees, sink into the earth. Creeping to the edge of the crater which had been formed and which measured fifty yards across, they heard sounds of falling water. An attempt was made to plumb the depth with a weighted rope, which was lowered 550 ft without, however, touching bottom. A fresh subsidence engulfed the rope. The spectacle of olive trees disappearing into the earth within 300 yards of the nearest houses of the village, and the strange rumblings below the ground caused much alarm among the villagers. The mayor has asked the Government to send scientists to investigate the incident.
