NICE STRING AT PAPATOETOE

TRAINER HALL’S STABLE SHELTERS GREAT NORTHERN FAVOURITE

There is quite a large team in work at Papatoetoe at the present time. Indeed, trainer R. Hall must have his hands full, for he is handling no less than ten horses just now. What brings the Papatoetoe mentor into the limelight now is the interesting fact that he has under his eye the favourite for the two Great Northerns, Kawini. No one more than the trainer appreciates the task of preparing a horse for two big races like this, both tiring events, and run on consecutive days. Nevertheless, if Kawini is sent for the two races, he will strip as fit as his trainer can make him. However, there is a feeling that Kawini may not be asked to accomplish such a stupendous task. Later something more definite will become known. KAWINI DOING WELL

In the meantime it will be some encouragement for early bettors to know that the Foremost gelding is getting along satisfactorily in his work. G. Holland will ride him at Ellerslie. In addition to Kawini, R. Hall has Catapult, Exalted, Edifice, Miss Lucca, Charitaine, Te Tahi, Royal Present and a couple of youngsters. One of the latter is a two-year-old sister to Cataput, and the other, a yearling, a halfsister by Snow King to Catapult. Miss Lucca is a full sister to Llewellyn, who on Thursday won the Egmont Steeplechase, and she has qualified for hunters’ events. She is a good jumper, and may be given a chance to show it at the winter meeting next month. AN IMPROVING SORT

Catapult was improving every time out prior to winning at Te Rapa, and as the Catmint three-year-old has not been overdone by any means he should do well next season. He has been running on at the end of his races, and this suggests ability to get a middle distance.

Exalted has been somewhat unlucky this season, and doubtless she, too, will do better next racing term. Charitaine is still a maiden, and she has shown up in this class. Te Tahi at Te Rapa held out hope of returning form, and this winter will give him a chance of coming good. Royal Present is to be tried over the sticks, and with his undoubted pace he will only have to jump well to make some amends for his past failures.

Trainer R. Hall has got quite a good string together, and within the next few months his name should be prominent on the list of winning trainers. As he also has a few trotters, who are capable of capturing good races, he should be looking to the immediate future with feelings of confidence.
