Butterfly Roof Supplants Old Type
AUCKLAND’S NEW STATION THE several platforms of AuckA land’s new railway station will be sheltered by a new type of roof, which will not only cover the platform, but part of the carriages as well. With the “hip” type of roof now in use, the drainage is outward, and every traveller knows what it is like when the spouting leaks. For the Auckland station a butter-fly-type of roof will supplant the hip roof. The outside edges of the butterfly roof are the highest part of it, and clear the tops of the carriages, while rainwater drains inward to a gutter running along the middle. A line of centrepoles will support the roofs, as with the type now in use.
Interesting features of the new station will be subways leading to the different arrival and departure platforms, which are to be at first floor level. There will also be a large circular concourse, in which the ticket booths will be located.
