A DOZEN JOBS

HIS LAST CHANCE TWO YEARS’ PROBATION A change is as good as a rest, it has been said. Norman Thornton, an assisted immigrant, evidently thinks so, for he has been in a dozen different jobs since he came to New Zealand two years ago. Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., said that he felt like giving the youth (who is IS) six months, when he came before him this morning for sentence on two charges of stealing bicycles. Captain Davies undertook to do what he could to find Thornton work if he was given a chance. “He’s promised me he’ll work,” said the Salvation Army man. “I’ll place you on probation for two years,” the magistrate told Thornton, “and that means if you don’t work there’s six months’ imprisonment waiting for you. It’s the last chance you’re going to get in this country.”
