LUNCHEON TALK
AT LYCEUM CLUB Mrs. W. H. Parkes, the president of the Lyceum Club, presided at a luncheon talk given in the club yesterday by Professor Worley, who took for his subject “Artificial Silk.” An interesting account of the various processes through which artificial silk is passed before it reaches the delightful forms in which it is familiar to all of us, was given by the professor. He traced the development of the industry through its meteoric career of recent years and illustrated his remarks with some illuminating figures. In 1922 the total output of the world’s artificial silk business ran into about 80 million pounds, while by 1925 the amount had increased to somewhere in the region of 197 million pounds.
In his graphic description of the production of artificial silk from wood fibre and other strange constituents, Professor Worley exhibited specimens of the various types of the finished product, as well as samples of the interesting intermediate substances.
Modern ideas penetrate slowly in ecclesiastical circles. Recently a woman member of the Westminster City Council, Mrs. Lionel Harris, was appointed with two aldermen and three other councillors to attend officially a service at the Abbey. Next day, however, she was informed that her services would not be required, as women were not allowed to sit in the choir stalls, the seats in which the councillors were to be accommodated !
