APPLE PRICES FIRMER TOMATOES MAKING 14/Good business was recorded in the City Auction Marts this morning with a steady demand for all lines of field and garden produce. Fair stocks of imported fruit was also available. FRUIT Apples in shorter supply are commanding better values this week. Tomatoes have firmed considerably. Local hot-house grapes are now selling up to 3s a lb., but Sydney grapes are in less demand and values are down as low r as 15s to lSs a 251 b. case. A small shipment of Cook Island oranges ex Wellington arrived on Wednesday, and repacks are making 25s to 25s 6d a case. Bananas are scarce. Prices for most sought after lines range as follow: —Apples, from 5s 6d a case for good cookers to 9s a case for Delicious; pears. 7s to 11s for first grade lots, according to variety; lemons, in plentiful supply, 5s to 12s a case; American oranges, 37s to 40s: persimmons. 2s 6to4s 6d a case: local tomatoes, good. 6s to 14s, according to quality; inferior lots from 3s 6d. VEGETABLES The market continues well supplied with field and garden produce, though cabbages are now selling at decidedly higher rates. Prices range: Potatoes, Southern, 6s 6d to 7s 6d a cwt: local 2s 6d to 3s 6d a sack: onions, best 4s 6d to 5s a cwt; inferior lots, 2s 6d to 2s 8d a sugar bag; cabbages, 4s 6d to 7s 6d a sack; lettuce, Is to 3s a case.
