NEW ZEALAND CUP
CONDITIONS UNALTERED LIMIT REQUIRES ATTENTION With so many horses recording fast times over a two-mile journey during the season now drawing to a close, and an increasing number reaching a, state of eligibility for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, there was good reason to believe that the time limit for the 1927 race would have been subjected to further contraction. Trotting enthusiasts were not perhaps looking for an increase in the prize money, which has grown to the fine total of 3,000 sovs, but a reduction of the 4.28 limit, however slight, would have been appreciated by keen followers of the pastime. TWENTY-SIX QUALIFIED Under existing conditions some 26 horses are at present eligible, a score having traversed 16 furlongs in 4.28 or better, while the remaining half-dozen have at some time been considered by handicappers as up to New Zealand Cup standard and been placed on a 4.28 mark, which gives their owners
the privilege of entering their representatives for the chief event of the year in the Dominion trotting world Although a few meetings still remain to be decided, there should not be much danger of the number of eligibles being augmented to any extent as during the winter season the tracks will
not be conducive to record-breakin,’ feats or substantial parings oft previous times. However, without iny additional recruits there is ample ioaterial to ensure a large field and an ; interesting contest. FIELD PROMISES TO BE BIG Allowing that the owners of the 2t pacers’ and trotters are ambitious in the direction of winning a New Zealand Cup, and the whole contingert make the initial payment and recelvtheir marks of merit from the bands of i handicapper Brinkman, there will be the usual withdrawals from various causes, but unless something unforeseen occurs, the defections will not be extensive, and there is every prospect of a large field contesting the next Cup. While the authorities have decided on this occasion to retain the 4.28 lieu;, it will not be long before it will require to be tightened up if the flea for the richly-endowed handicap * not to become unwieldy in the future. Such progress is being made in the direction of speed, caused through the high-class production and improve breeding facilities, together with tee special preparation and attention to many of the principle tracks in Dominion, that each year will mark a greater number considerably reducing their /handicap, and augmenting treligibles for Cup honours to such •* extent that it will become necessa.: to clip the wings of the present tim limit.
