WORK AT ELLERSLIE
QUIET MORNING INTERESTING SCHOOLING OPERATIONS There was a fair amount of galloping and schooling over the hurdles at Ellerslie this morning, with nothing outstanding in the way of performances. The course proper and number three grass tracks were available for fast work, and they were in .excellent order. From a time point of view the best gallop was done by Modest Boy and judge’s Box, who finished together at the end of five furlongs from the new five furlong post, running the last four in 50 2-5, and the last three in 38 2-5. Q*THER TRIALS Other gallops on the course proper were:—Respirator, three furlongs in 42 1-5; Nassock, half a mile in 53: Town Guard and Cawnpore, six furlongs in 1.21, the first three in 39 4-5, finishing together. On number three grass Chamour impressed by the manner in which he left six furlongs behind in 1.20 1-5, the last four in 53 1-5, and could have reduced this considerably if it had' been required. Glenotus hit out very well in company with Blue Sky, running the same distance in an easy 1.20 2-5, the first three taking 39 2-5. There were several other gallops, but those mentioned were the pick. OVER HURDLES
Karamu (R. Olive) was put over a couple of hurdles, and negotiated them in a finished manner. He afterwards galloped six furlongs in 1.23 on number three grass. Simplicitas had Gold Fern as a companion over one pony hurdle, the for mer jumping all right, and Gold Fern scrambling over. They were tlien put over a couple, with the same result at the first, but Gold Fern improved at the second.
Blue Sky (Sharkey), Glenlight (B. Price) and Wonder Star (R. Olive) were sent a round of the big hurdles, the two first-mentioned going away with a break. Blue Sky fenced in improved style, while Glenlight was inclined to run down his jumps. Wonder Star ran by himself in the rear, and despite this handicap he negotiated the obstacles well, albeit a bit slow at the start. For a second attempt it was an encouraging effort. STEADILY IMPROVING
Rahepoto (R. Olive), Tall Timber (E. Garrett), and King of the Air (Hastings) lined up for once round the big hurdles, but in jumping off King of the Air stumbled and unshipped Hastings, and it was some time before he was caught, Tall Timber in the meantime having scrambled over the first fence. Then they got away, but at the very first fence Rahepoto outjumped his companions, and taking every obstacle in his stride he proved himself too good for Tail Timber, who lost ground at each hurdle. King of the Air ran in the rear the whole way.
Another Australian Invasion The latest horses to be placed under orders for Australia are Mosaic and Nancy Lee, both of whom of late have been showing signs of returning form. They are to go across for the spring racing. Hawera Defections
Yesterday Archeen (4.30 p.m.) and Goldpiece (3 p.m.) were scratched for their engagements at Hawera to-day. Amateur Rider
Mr. S. Howard is to have the mount on Town Guard in the Carbine Plate, the event for amateur riders, to be decided on the second day of the Auckland winter meeting.
