CAUSTIC CRITIC-

RACED TOO EARLY WHY HORSES BECOME UNSOUND QUESTION FOR TRAINERS TO ANSWER A correspondent who would treat racehorses differently, writes: “I would like to ask some of our well-known trainers, who have made a life study of the training of racehorses, why, in their opinion, so many racehorses break down on the eve of important meetings?” ‘‘Personally, I think two-year-old racing, and the use of bandages, is responsible. How many of the colts and fillies sold at the recent sales will ever face the barrier? Why not abolish two-year-old racing, and give the hdrses time to mature? NOTABLE CASE “Wakeful, the greatest mare that ever looked through a bridle, not only in Australia, but perhaps in the world, is a case in point. This mare was given time to develop, not being broken in until she was four years old. “Stock horses on stations, that are ridden from morning till night mustering cattle, and that are used on cattle camps - cutting out on rough ground, are not bandaged, with the result that even when 15 years old they never show a sign of a splint or a blemish.”
