PRAISE FOR PIONEERS
OUR SECONDARY INDUSTRIES “VALUE OF FORESIGHT” “I desire to congratulate members on the very satisfactory position of the association, a position which owes much to those hardy pioneer manufacturers who founded the association some .40 years ago,” said Mr. J. A. C. Allum at the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association this afternoon. “Notwithstanding the fact that New Zealand was at that time regarded as a purely agricultural country, those pioneers had visions of the day when their young country would be able to manufacture teh greater part of the goods essential to its existence and woLild to a very large extent become self-contained. “The immense valuie of their foresight was clearly demonstrated during the Great War. The advantages of having manufacturing industries in time of trouble and the great efforts put forth by our manufacturers to fill the breach are, however, speedily forgotten when the question of revising the tariff is mooted.”
