FATAL NEGLIGENCE OF MOTOR-DRIVER
FLOCK HOUSE BOY’S DEATH HEAVY FINE AND COSTS Press Association PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. The retrial was held to-day of John Drummond, a retired ironmonger, of Dannevirke, aged 73, on a charge of negligently driving a motor-car on the Woodville-Pahiatua Road, on November 30, .1926, thereby causing the death of George Vinton, a Flock House trainee.
The jury returned a verdict of guiltj’, with a recommendation that the law should be framed to compel pedestrians on highways where there are no footpaths to keep to the right so as to face oncoming traffic. Mr. Justice Alpers imposed a fine of £IOO, and ordered Drummond to pay £SO toward the cost of the two trials. The judge cancelled accused’s driver’s licence for four years. “Had there been the slightest suggestion of joy-riding or drunkenness,” stated his Honour, addressing accused, “then, in spite of your years, it would have been my duty to send you to prison. You were over-con-fident of your powers as a driver.”
