RUGBY IN THE PROVINCE SOUTH AUCKLAND’S GOOD YEAR (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, To-day. At the annual meeting of the South Auckland Rugby Union, the president, Mr. J. Dean, reported that the past season had been a most successful one. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £SB. The election of officers resulted as follow: —Patron, Mr. H. "Wilcox; sident, Mr. J. Dean; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. R. Wilson and E. C. Foote (Manukau), Robert Brownlee and J. Beatty (Pukekohe), G. Carter and C. J. Leathern (Franklin), A. Naysmith and D. Cooper (Waiuku); secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. J. Short; auditor, Mr. S. Campbell; senior selector, Mr. W. A. Smeed; junior selector, Mr. G. C. Revell; lion, surgeon, Dr. A. T. Begg; delegate to Auckland Rugby Union, Mr. T. H. Patterson. It was decided to approve of the applications of R. Rowe and A. Mason for reinstatement and to forward the same to the New Zealand Union for confirmation. Clearances were granted to B. Short, T. Cathcart and C. Palmer to play for Auckland clubs. Several delegates expressed the opinion that in future such application should be refused. To the Manukau Sub-Union was referred the question of defining a boundary between the Auckland and South Auckland Unions, proposals to be submitted to the former union for approval. Permission was granted to the Manurewa Club to play its third-grade team in the Auckland competitions for one season. Reference was made to the fact that a number of the union’s players had been playing in Auckland since the opening of the season without first having obtained clearances, and it was agreed to bring the matter under the notice: of the Auckland Union. The: union decided to entertain the referees to dinner on May 19, the date of a conference betYveen referees.
OPOTIKI RUGBY UNION
KUSAB’S SHIELD WON OUTRIGHT At the annual meeting of the Opotiki Rugby Union, special reference was made to the Opotiki representatives having won the Kusab’s’ Shield for all time. A congratulatory letter Yvas received from the Rangitaiki Union. The president announced that a new shield, valued at £SO, had been donated for competition among Bay of Plenty Unions. It was decided to endeavour to open the season on May 14. The Kusab’s Cup records reads as follows;—1912, Whakatane; 1913, Opotiki; 1914, Rotorua; 1915-18, war period and no competition; 1919, Te Puke; 1920, unfinished; 1921, Tauranga; 1922, Rotorua; 1923, unfinished; 1924, Tauranga; 1925, Opotiki; 1926, Opotiki, won outright. Apanui and Taupo Unions did not hold the cup on any occasion. election of officers resulted as follows;—President, Mr. P. Burton. The retiring president did not seek reelection. Committee, Messrs. T. Hendry, Purcell, Yorke, Mio, Sharfoon, Davis, Smith, Braae, Jephson, and Shove; secretary, Mr. C. Morris; treasurer, Mr. W. T. Burrett. Mr. G. S. Moody, mayor, was again re-elected patron. During the past season Mr. Moody has spent £4O in furthering the interests of the game.
HAMILTON STARTS OFF
(From Our Oxen Correspondent .) HAMILTON, To-day. Favoured by ideal weather the Rugby season opened auspiciously at Hamilton on Saturday, when some excellent games Y\ r ere witnessed, the senior matches providing good exhibitions. City scored an overwhelming victory over Tech. Old Boys by 39 points to 6. displaying great combination and fitness. They fielded a strong fifteen, which was far superior to Technical Old Boys, who nevertheless made a game struggle. In this match E. Attwood had his left leg broken. Old Boys defeated Franklin by the tunc of 13 points to 3 in a fast, open game. The standard of play in both games was good, and undoubtedly the improved surface of the football ground was a contributory factor.
