NO EVIDENCE

CROWN’S CASE FAILS GIRL’S STORY REJECTED “I cannot ask the Jury to convict a man on the uncorroborated evidence of a girl who admits to such behaviour,” stated His Honour Air. Justice Herdman after peremptorily ordering the witness out of the box. The case was one in which charges were preferred ‘against a young man, Robert Hughes, in connection with a girl under the age of 16. It was under cross-examination by Air. A. Aloody, who appeared for the accused, that the witness in question freely admitted keeping company with a number of young men and boys. This, she stated, had been going' on for about a year.

Without leaving the box the jury returned a verdict of not guilty forthwith.
