GLEN EDEN WANTS NEW POST OFFICE
PRESENT BUILDING ALLEGED TO BE UNHEALTHY
The contention that the Glen Eden Post. Office was not a fit building for the conduct of postal business, on the ground that three persons had died of consumption therein prior to its conversion to current business purposes, was submitted by Mr. G. IT. Hayes at Glen Eden last evening. The statement was made during proceedings in which the Glen Eden Town Board, of which Mr. Hayes is a member, was urging on the member for the district, Mr. H. G. R. Alason, M.P., the necessity for improved postal facilities for the district. The chairman, Air. W. IT. Shepherd, in mentioning the matter of a new post office as being the district’s urgent requirement, said that the existing building was by no means a credit to the district. Mr. A. J. Routley referred to futile negotiations which had taken place in connection with a site whkh he owned, and which he considered suitable t r r the erection of a post office. ITe made his position clear in that he would deal on a valuation. basis, both parties one valuator each, and if necessary an arbitrator to be called in. He was also prepared to allow the department a rebate, but stipulated that the building would have to be erected in two years. The necessity for supplementing the staff at the post office was also mentioned, Air. W. E. Martin pointing out that the duties of the full delivery of telegrams, etc., fell on the shoulders of one boy. Mr. G. IT. Hayes pointed out that Henderson, with less population than Glen Eden, had two postmen and a messenger.
The town clerk said that relief for the boy was an urgent necessity. Mr. Alason could see no good reason why the department should not go into both matters, and he agreed to do his utmost in respect to having both requirements acceded to
