WHAT CRIME COSTS AMERICA
Crime costs the United States of America on a conservative estimate nearly £2,600,000,000 yearly, and on a liberal estimate may approach £4,000,000,000, according to Mr. M. O. Prentiss, one of the leading authorities, in a recent issue of the “Manufacturers’ Record.”
Mr. Prentiss gives details as follow: —Thefts from warehouses, shops and houses, £125.000,000; fraudulent securities, £100,000,000: transportation thefts, £100,000,000: fraudulent bankruptcies. £ SO,000,000: embezzlements, £30,000,000; worthless cheques, C 24.000,000: forgeries, £20,000,000; thefts from mails, £2.000,000; drug traffic, £200,000,000; liquor traffic, £200,000,000; • commercial vice, £25,600.000; waste effort by 2.000,000 criminals; £ 600.000.0tl0; value of 12,500 murdered persons, ,£25,000,000.
