“ENGLAND’S HEART IS SOUND”
CRITICAL YEARS IN BRITAIN THE POLITICAL SITUATION By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright LONDON, Saturday. The Earl of Birkenhead, Secretary of State for India, addressed the Southampton Chamber of Commerce. He said: “We are living in a critical period of British politics. The next two years will inevitably determine the fortunes of the Empire and England, possibly for half a century. “The election ahead will be the most critical one ever held in the history of Britain. It will discriminate between the men who believe in sanity, sobriety and a continuity of British life, and those who believe in Moscow’s fever-stricken, malignant doctrines.
“There is nobody in the British Government to-day who is not making immense sacrifices in order to remain a member of it. If we undertake these tasks surely we have some right to ask something of the people. “I am satisfied that England’s heart is sound, and that the great spirit of the nation is available to repel Moscow, but it will not be available unless men who in the past have not taken part in politics, come to our assistance.”—“Times.”
