“ALWAYS IN GAOL”
UNWANTED HINDU TWO MORE YEARS “Ever since you landed in New Zealand you have been engaged in crime,” said His Honor Mr. Justice Herdman, addressing Ivan Ganesh, a Hindu, found guilty of being an incorrigible rogue.
“Your fellow countrymen have constantly complained about you for robbery and assault, and you have spent most of your time in gaol.” The prisoner’s record of having spent half his stay in New Zealand at Mount Eden, was added to by a further term of two years’ imprisonment with hard labour. SHE WAS LUCKY CONVICTED FOR VAGRANCY ! “Iv’e been in since Saturday night,” was the mild protest of Martha Guin, a woman of 32, who was charged in the Police Court this morning with being an idle and disorderly person. “Well, you’re lucky you’re not in lor several Saturday nights,” was the magistrate’s quick retort. The woman, it was said, was married to a Chinaman, and had been seen on several nights about the streets, where it was alleged she had been soliciting. Senior-Sergeant Edwards spoke a wbrd in her favour. He knew her nine or ten years ago, he said, but she had behaved herself since then. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., convicted her nd ordered her to come up for sentence if called on, and to pay 10s costs.
