THE AUCKLAND CLUB CLUB COMPETITIONS
The Auckland Bowling Club has alI ways been noted for the number of I club matches that are provided for ; competition among its members. The J central situation of the green enables j many of these games to be played during the week. This circumstance I contributes largely to the success of the contests. The club’s programme comprises the
following matches: —Club fours, club championship singles, junior championship singles, champion pairs, club handicap pairs, first-year players’ championship, and the following handicap events; Diamond Jubilee Cup, which is played on the two-life system; Anzac Cup, Veterans’ Handicap, that is open to players over 60 years of age; and the Consolation Handicap, open only to players who have not previously won a singles match in the club.
The singles games are all 2T points. The winner must score 21 points by play, so that a player on scratch, playing an opponent on the 4-point mark, would need to score 25 points to his opponents’s 21 points. This system invariably produces a game of anything from 20 to 28 heads. It has therefore been found to work more satisfactorily than the 21-head game for handicaps. THE CHAMPIONSHIP LIST The club championship was won for the second season in succession by Professor Maxwell Walker, with P. J. Scantlebury runner-up. Professor Walker’s wonderful skill is widely known throughout Australasia. Mr. Scantlebury is a player who shows distinctive quality of play. It might be safely predicted that this young player will permanently find a place in our front-rank players in the near future. His standard of play this year fully justifies this prediction. The junior championship was fought out between L. G. Ansell and H. R. Allan, two of the most promising of the younger division. After a spirited contest, Ansell proved victorious. In several of his games, this player seemed in a helpless position. But with rare persistency, he fought to the end and captured the final honours. H. R. Allan is one of the most improved players on the green. He has been successful in an excellent showing in other events, as well as the junior championship. The champion pairs commenced late in the season and is nearing completion. The two lifers are Cater and Muston. Craig and Osmond, Lyell and Hardie Neil, G. J. Mackay and Duncan Brackebusli and Walker all have one life. The club handicap pairs resulted in a popular win for Dr. Tracey Inglis (lead), E. I. Lyell (skip), 11. Rainger (lead) and H. G. McCrea (skip) were the runners-up. Dr. Inglis has been the solid man of the medicos’ team in the club for some time past. The experience gained by Mr. Lyell in association with the tournament combinations of both Mr. G. B. Osmond and Professor Walker has contributed largely to his success on this occasion. The first year players' championship is played on the section system, and should see Dr. Keith S. Macky emerge victorious. The final of the Diamond Jubilee Cup competition will be played between Colin Muston and P. J. Scantlebury. Muston was in excelent form in the Easter fours competition and will be hard to dispose of. THE ANZAC CUP The final of the Anzac Cup was played between P. J. Scantlebury (1 behind scratch) and Professor Walker (3 behind scratch). These players previously fought out the final of the club championship. On this occasion Scantlebury succeeded in turning the tables on his redoubtable opponent. The conditions provide in the final for the best two out of three games. The second and third games were of remarkably keen interest. In the third game the honours were actually contested on the final head. Scantlebury scored three and ran out a winner by one point. The Veterans’ Handicap resulted in a most popular win for the club’s senior vice-president, G. J. Mackay, who won by two games in the final from R. Hewitson. Mr. Mackay has rendered valuable service to the club for several years as chairman of the ground committee, and while he has always occupied a prominent place in the club’s competitions, this is the first occasion on which Mr. Mackay has been successful in a singles match. The Consolation Handicap provided a keen contest between two of the club’s newest members. Dr Keith S. Macky winning the two final games in succession from J. P. Aldred. Dr. Macky will be remembered for his steady and consistent leading in the club’s successful rink, skipped by Professor Walker in the second Rotorua tournament. During the season he has proved with his liberal handicap to be a thorn in the side of many older players, in the various competitions. At Easter he skipped the club’s firstyear’s rink, which performed most creditably. This player is an undoubted find for his club. He plays with the steadiness of a veteran. More will certainly be heard of him, if he retains his first year’s form, as a basis for future improvement.
