ARCHENO IMPROVES

NOW SMART SPRINTER SPOILS BERINTHIA’S DOUBLE POPULAR WIN AT LIBERAL ODDS No more popular win was scored at at Te Rapa than that of Archeno on Wednesday. The surprising part about it was that the daughter of Archiestown was at such a great; price On the first day she dwelt at the peg —she did the same thing in both her Eilerslie starts —and then was flying in fourth position at the end. Indeed, she was shown up in such a fashion that it was quite expected that she would go out favourite in the Flying Handicap, but instead there were four others better backed, and her starting price was nearly a doublefigure one. She put up a couple of pounds overweight, and this made very little difference. Incidentally, when Archeno ran fourth the first day she was at almost as big a price as Red Comet paid when he won on Wednesday. HANDILY PLACED Reilly made no mistake in hopping his mount out quickly, and soon she was running on the rails in sixth position, where she remained to the turn. When they had straightened up Berinthia was three lengths clear of the field, and then at the distance Archeno made her run, overhauling the

leader at every stride. However, it did not seem as if she would get up, until a few lengths from the post, when she collared Berinthia, and after a short, sharp tussle, beat her by half a length. It was a fine effort, and ownertrainer Mr. W. J. Urquhart came in for many congratulations upon his win. Archeno is built of the right metal, and she should do still further service. Her next appearance will probably be in the sprint events at the Auckland winter meeting. NEARLY PULLED IT OFF Berinthia vex*y nearly won her double, for two races previously she had accounted for the hack seven. She is running on much better than hitherto. Berinthia is a half-sister, by Mountain Knight, to the speedy Civility. King Lu showed some imrpovement on his first day’s form in getting up third, and is evidently coming back to form. King Merv, made favourite in the Flying Handicap, was a bit unlucky, for he got up fourth after being well back in the early stages. The Quin Abbey gelding is by no means a spent light. He would have had to have everything his own way to beat the first and second horses, however, for they were well clear at the end. White Bird ran a good race, being just behind King Merv, and almost with Aussie, who never came into the picture until after they had straightened tip. White Bird will probably do better next season. THE TRUSTING PUNTERS A number of super-optimists clubbed together and invested £36 on the chances of Joy Germ, and after flattering them for half a furlong he faded out. Newbury went nicely to the turn, when he was finished with, and V alue ran a similar race. Tinoiti was in the rear early, and afterwards failed to make any impression. Ned Kelly and Han Quin were also prominent into the straight, and then failed to keep going when the pressure was applied. Except for the straight, Delightment was never further back than second, and he died out very quickly . lie to lose his position. Bobbin, for a well-backed one, failed A.W.R.S.
