LATE MR. WILLIAM HARKINS
OLD VOLUNTEER FIREMAN
An old resident of Auckland, Mr. William Harkins, aged 64, died at Devonport yesterday. He had been president of the Auckland Workingmen’s Club and Mechanics’ Institute for the past two years, a member for upwards of 30 years, and an office-bearer for 25 years. Mr. Harkins was a prominent member of the National Independent Order of Oddfellows, of which he was past provincial grand master, and had been a membe of the United Brothers’ Lodge for more than 40 years. He was one of the founders of the Auckland Friendly Societies’ Conference and Dispensary. Mr. Harkins served first at Grafton station as an old volunteer fireman and afterwards was foreman of the City Fire Brigade at Albert Street station. He was subsequently made a life members of the Fire Brigades Old Boys’ Association. Mr. Harkins was a partner in the firm of Messrs. Harkins and Bouldin, tinsmiths. His wife survives him.
