RADIO WAVE-LENGTHS

AN AUCKLAND COMPLAINT TESTS TO BE MADE Alterations in the wave-lengths of the various broadcasting stations were explained to a deputation of Auckland radio dealers who waited on Mr. G. McNamara, Secretary of the Rost and Telegraph Department, yesterday afternoon. The Christchurch station’s wavelength was increased recently from 400 metres to 405 metres, and Dunedin from 380 metres to 435 metres. This was done so that listeners-in from all parts of the Dominion could pick up the greatest number of stations both in New Zealand and Australia. A decision regarding wave-lengths was limited, but the comparison with Australia was favourable. Mr. McNamara quoted the following table for the benefit of the deputa.tion: —2BL Sydney, 353 metres; 3LO Melbourne, 371 metres; 2YA Wellington, 380 metres (when in operation); 4QG Brisbane, 385 metres; SCL Adelaide, 395 metres; 3YA Christchurch, 405 metres; IYA Auckland, 420 metres, 4YA Dunedin, 435 metres, and 2FC Sydney, 442 metres. Mr. McNamara stated that in making the alterations the Department felt that it was meeting the needs of the majority of listeners-in, and personally he had not heard any criticism of the change. The members of the deputation explained that with five-valve heterodyne sets and lower, some difficulty was experienced in separating Christchurch and Auckland under present conditions. Mr. McNamara said that he would go very thoroughly into the complaint and have tests made. The only people who seemed to be affected were those within a radius of five miles of the Auckland station.
