INDECENT ASSAULT CHARGE FRUITERER ACQUITTED Absolute denial of any improper conduct was the defence set up by a New Lynn fruiterer, Jackson Sutcliffe (38), in answer to a charge of indecent assault on a girl of ten years. The case was heard by His Honour Mr. Justice Stringer and a jury of twelve this m irning. The offence was alleged to have taken place in the shop of Sutcliffe on January 26. the little girl having come in to buy a lettuce. Mr. V. R. Meredith, the Crown Prosecutor, admitted that there was no corroboration of the child’s evidence. Mr. A. Moody defended the prisoner. His Honour said that it would be improper for the jury to convict on the uncorroborated evidence. “It is a highly improbable story that a man would do that sort of thing when his wife might be looking on through the glass slide of the shop,” he said. Without retiring the jury found the prisoner not guilty and he was discharged. _____________
