NO SALARY INCREASE

POST AND TELEGRAPH BAD YEAR ANTICIPATED “There is no immediate prospect of an all-round increase in salary in the Post and Telegraph Department,' 7 the secretary of the department, Mr. T. McNamara, told a SUN representative to-day. “This is not the time for much development in salary-raising.” he continued. “Conditions are not particularly bright with a slump in business.” Mr. McNamara explained that the salary vote for the department is at present over £1,500,000. Any addition to this, if every member of the staff had his or her salary raised, would mean a large increase to the already big expenditure. Further, the department is anticipating a bad year. If business outside is not good, that of the department must fall off accordingly. Mr. McNamara says that business may improve in the spring. Expenditure in the department has been curtailed during the last year. This, combined with a slight increase in business last year, has enabled the department to show a profit. The secretary stated that the salaries of some officials of the department are increasing from time to time, but that is only where the growth of the district has warranted such an increase. These salary-growths are going on all the time, but only very slowly.
