CHEQUE AND LETTER

TRIAL OF FRANK JOHNSON THEFT AND FORGERY CHARGES The trial of Frank Lewis Johnson •Mr Allan Moody), on charges of theft and forgery at Auckland, was taken before Mr. Justice Stringer and a jury of 12. Mr. Paterson, for the Crown, said the prisoner was given a letter to post. It contained a cheque and lie used that for his own purpose. He endorsed the cheque with a name that he had no authority to use. He was a farm labourer employed by Murphy 3ros., of Thames. In July last he was given a letter containing the cheque for £l2. He was asked to register and post the letter from Auckland. It never arrived at its destination, but was cashed at the Farmers’ Union Co., although that firm could not say who had tendered the cheque. The evidence, which consists chiefly of that by handwriting experts, is proceeding.
