PRESS COMMENT ON “PLUS FOURS”

WOUNDS AMERICAN TOURISTS WANGANUI PERTURBED (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, To-day. The Wanganui Chamber of Commerce is perturbed over the Raymond Whitcombe Company’s announcement that it will no longer shepherd American tourists, as a protest against newspaper criticism. Evidently some of the tourists were rather thin-skinned and did not like some references to “plus fours,” etc. Mr. J. Coull last night alleged that the Wanganui papers made injudicious references to tourists and he thought it was unfair if, after the chamber’s work to get tourists to Wanganui, the press was going to drive them away just for the sake of a bit of “nippy copy.” He thought is was a libel on the American tourist to suggest meanness or niggardliness. Eventually the matter was allowed to drop.
