50TH. ANNIVERSARY
THE FIRST BONE-SHAKER A notable anniversary slipped by me on March 21. It was the fiftieth of the era of the cyclists and motorcyclists, as it was on March 21, that the Rover Company began trading in what they, then claimed to be “Britain’s Best Bone-shaker.” To-day we demand smooth running qualities rather than the shaking of our bones. What really made cycling possible for the man in the street was the invention of the '“safety” bicycle by Mr. J. K. Starley, the father of the present managing director of the Rover Company. Previous to that the “penny farthing” type of machine was used, with one very big wheel and one small one.
