MOUNT ROSKILL ELECTION
ADDRESSES BY CANDIDATES RATEPAYERS’ “TICKET” Under the auspices of the Combined Progressive Ratepayers’ Associations of Mount,. Roskill, about thr€?e score persons (one lady) assembled in the public hall, Royal Oak, last evening, to listen to addresses by the six “ticket” candidates selected for support in next Saturday’s road board election. Mr. Langley, a member of Mount Eden Borough Council, presided. He alluded to the vast area comprising the Mount Roskill district, as compared with some neighbouring boroughs—a fact that should convince electors of the necessity for electing only those candidates possessing keen business instincts and the capacity for working assiduously and without prejudicial partiality in the public interests. Four of the six selected candidates presented their views and general policies, namely, Messrs. C. Perrins, R. J. Mills, J. T. Chadderton, and A. E. Roxborough. Air. Perrins was called upon first, and his views were fairly fully endorsed by the other speakers. He condemned the practice of sections of some local authorities centring their attentions and efforts upon one part of a district only, urging that community of interests should be the main object. Taking heed how the country itself is embarrassed with the huge debts. Mount Roskill must proceed very warily in its expenditure, but they must not be excessively economical. From a health point of view a complete drainage system should be provided with expedition. Upon the subject of improved transport, he argued that the maintenance of a permanent bus service could not be vouchsafed by private enterprise, but had a proper tramcar service been provided, no other method of transport would have been necessary. ROADS AND TRANSPORT A general reading scheme, particularly affecting the concreting of Three Kings, Mount Albert, and other principal roads, was dealt with by this and the other speakers, the general contention being that, although delay in the completion of such works should not be permitted, the board should deal entirely with one road at a time. Three Kings Road was described as the most disreputable road in the district, costing at present £SOO per annum merely for patching with scoria, and then sweeping off the dust and mud resulting therefrom. The present supply of impure water from the City Council, at a rate of I ;y----ment heavier than was charged elsewhere, came in for considerable condemnation; lighting of public streets was a subject viewed with “secondary consideration”; and amalgamation with Auckland was a question answered by a decided negative. Air. Mills directed his remarks particularly to improved facilities for transport, and he advocated a bettor supply of pure water, at a flat rate of payment. Air. Chadderton’s strong point, also, was better means of transport by the way of “trams, and more trams.” Air. Rosborough’s address concerned principally roading work. He argued that Alount Albert Road could be put into temporary repair by regrading the worst portion, the cost of such work to be met out of the fund accumulated for such a purpose. Each candidate had to find answers to a variety of questions, some of them being far from in accord with the candidates’ views. A vote of thanks to the candidate* was carried, with only a few dissentient voices.
