MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE

DUNEDIN CRIMINAL SESSIONS Press Association. DUNEDIN, To-day. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened this morning, before Mr Justice Reed. Addressing the Grand Jury, His Honour said six persons were accused of crime. A man was charged with manslaLighter, or alternately with driving a motor-car negligently, causing the death of a man. This was one of the usual motor-car cases, of which unfortunately there were so many. The defence suggested that the man knocked down dodged about in front of the car, and that it was his own fault that he was killed. The driver of the car had no right to put a person in such a position that the person had rapidly to make up his mind to avoid being knocked down. Other serious cases were one of carnal knowledge against a youth, and a charge of abduction against a young man, the girl being under 18. SESSION AT TIMARU Press Association. TIMARU, To-day. The criminal session of the Supreme Court opened to-day before Mr. Justice Adams. Addressing the Grand Jury, his Honour said he regretted that there was a greater number of cases than was usual in Timaru, and many were, unhappily, sexual cases concerning young children. It was deplorable that such cases were increasing. In addition, there was a case against two merchants for failing to keep proper books, and another under the Chattels Security Act. The Grand Jury returned true bills in all cases except in the case of William R. Todd.
