ANGLICAN HOMES

CARE FOR SYDNEY CHILDREN Mention is made by a "Wellington visitor to Sydney of a visit paid to the Church of England Honies for girls at Glebe. There are four large houses, and they take in about 150 children, from the ages of 3 to 17. “The houses are beautifully kept,” says the writer, “and the children look so happy and well cared for. The big girls make most wonderful laces and beautiful embroidery, which is sold there. They make exquisite handkerchiefs in lace, and take orders for trousseaux, as well

as doing church embroidery and Communion linen. They have a large chapel of their own, which will hold over 400 people, and have special Confirmation and other services. Some specially fine handkerchiefs were made and sent to Queen Mary, who had a letter of thanks sent to the girls, saying that she would use them on State occasions, and sent as well a large portrait of herself, signed and framed, which is a valued possession and put up over the mantelpiece in the workroom. The lace is made with cushions, bobbins, and pins, and is quite a work of art, the designs being very beautiful. We saw the tiny tots, who have a house to themselves, and who did a number of kindergartens, action songs and games for our benefit. Their big indoor playroom has a hand-painted dado round, showing nursery rhymes. There are, among other toys, three large dolls’ houses, one specially pretty, which has all seagrass furniture. There is also a big home for boys at Carlingford, about 150 are there, but we had not time to see that, but I hope to go another time.”
