Mrs. W. H. Field is a Wellington visitor to Auckland. Mrs. H. It. Cooke, of Auckland, is at present staying with her daughter, Mrs. J. Halligan, of Wellington. Dora Willcox (Mrs. William Moore), a New Zealand writer and poet, won the “Sydney Morning Herald” prize for the Canberra ode. Mrs. Noel McGregor, of Dunedin, is at present in town, and is the guest of Mrs. A. W. Sims, Indore, Mount Eden. Miss Edge leaves to-day by the Maunganui on a holiday visit to Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. C. Moyes, of Adelaide, are staying at the Star Hotel. Mrs. Kirby, wife of Mr. W. E. Kirby, manager of the Paramount Pictures, Auckland, is at present an inmate of “Awanui” Private Hospital, to undergo an operation. * * * Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Claridge, of Adelaide, are among the guests at the Hotel Cargen. * * * + Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Lavington, of Te Kuiti, are staying at the Central Hotel. . Mr. and Mrs. K. W. Neave, of Te Aroha, are visitors to Auckland and are staying at the Royal Hotel. Mrs. Trevor Bloomfield is at present in town from Waiuku. While in Auckland, Mrs. Bloomfield will make her headquarters at the Hotel Cargen. Lady Susan Townley, who has been a guest at Hotel Cargen, left town yesterday for a visit to Rotorua. Mrs. C. Trevethick left to-day for a short visit to Wellington. *< * * Mr. Justice Herdman and Mrs. Herdman are at present in Taurnnga, and will return to town early next week. Mrs. G. M. Simpson, of Wellington, who has been staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Waipiti Avenue, Epsom, has gone to Taumarunui, where she will be the guest of Mrs. T. Simpson, prior to her return home. Mrs. Reeves, of Napier, arrived in Auqkland by the Limited this morning. Miss Caro left town by the Southbound Limited last evening. * * * Mrs. De Courcy was a passenger for the South last evening. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Court and Mr. and Mrs. Harrop were among the people noticed leaving town by the Southern Limited last evening. The opening of the Misses Beresford’s dancing season was held last evening in the Masonic Hall, and proved a decided success. Pretty floral decorations had been arranged in the hall, and charming lighting arrangements were carried out under the supervision of Mr. C. Haullam. Delightful was supplied by Miss May Beresford’s orchestra, and during the evening a charming little ballet, entitled “ Lucky,” was presented by a number of -the pupils. AN ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Mr. John T. Tucker, of Wellington, to Mrs. Gerald Russell, of Christchurch. In view of the interest developing throughout the Dominion in motion picture acting, and the opportunities being offered young New Zealanders for engagement in the great studios of California, in their quest for new types, classes are to be commenced immediately in the art of mime, expression, and make-up for the camera. They will be conducted by Mr. Kenneth Brampton, the well-known actor and producer, assisted by Mile. Valerie Valeska.
