TIMBER INDUSTRY

SATISFACTORY RESULTS OF RECENT CONFERENCES Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. Recommendations proposed for the extended use of 0.8. timbers by a special committee set up by the Government, have been subject to discussion by the Sawmillers’ Federation. The Hon. A. D. McLeod said to-day that all suggestions made by the committee, which comprised officers of the Forestry, Public Works, Valuation and Industries and Commerce Departments, were most favourably and constructively criticised by the millers, who had since met the special committee for the purpose of dealing more fully with the details. The conferences resulted in the setting up of a special sub-section of the millers and an expert from the Forestry Department to deal immediately with the question of adopting a system of special uniform grading, either for New Zealand as a whole or for various timber districts according to the classes of timber available. For the purpose of putting into effect tlie departmental committee’s suggestions the Sawmillers’ Federation has already struck a levy on all members to raise special funds. “I anticipate further meetings will be held at an early date, when it is hoped that problems will be solved promptly and satisfactorily,” concluded the Minister.
