ARBITRATION COURT

INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES SWITCHBOARD OPERATORS Rates of wages and overtime in the award of the Auckland Electrical Trades (switchboard operators’ section) were referred to the ..Arbitration Court to-day. The union applied for the following rates of pay: —£7 10s for operators in main stations; £7 5s for operators in sub-stations, and £ 6 5s for beginners. Overtime was asked for at the rate of time and a-half for the first four hours, and double time thereafter. Mr. M. P. O’Leary, advocate for the union, denied that switchboard operating was unskilled work. There was not a sufficient margin of pay between the wiremen and the operators. Mr. S. E. Wright, for the employers, said that there had been no circumstances since the previous award to warrant an increase. The court reserved its decision. LEADLIGHT WORKERS The Painters, Decorators’ and Leadlight Workers’ Union applied for increased rates of pay in the new award for the leadlight workers. This was the only clause in dispute, the remainder of the award having been agreed on by the parties. Mr. H. Campbell, for the union, asked that the wages of glaziers and plate-glass cutters should be incresed from 2s 2d to 2s 6d an hour, and that cementers should receive £4 15s instead of £4 10s a week. The court reserved its decision.
