CHEAP POSTAGE
A RECORD SURPLUS AMOUNT EXCEEDS £874,000 Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH. Tuesday. The Postmaster-General, Hon. W. Nosworthy, announced at Marton this evening that the financial results of the Post and Telegraph Department for the year ended March 31 were the best in the history of the department. The receipts were greater than last year’s, which was a record, and as payments had declined, last year’s record surplus had been surpassed. Following is a comparison or* the department’s results for the last two years: Receipts in 1926-27, £3,2zu,666: 1925-26. £3,100,396, an increase of £120,270. Payments, 1926-27, £2,346,270, 1925-26, £2,409,556. a decrease of £ 63,286. Surplus in 192627 amounted to £874,396 and in 192526 £690,840, an increase of £183,556. Mr. Nosworthy added that in the last two years the department’s revenue had increased by £330,000. while its expenditure had been reduced by £70,000.
