A LAUNDRY HINT

“A few weeks after the honeymoon,” says an Australian bride, “I found myself in a country town where there was no laundry, nor any competent laundress for hire; and collars had to be starched, and I had never starched a collar in my life. I variously laughed, wept, swore, sweated—and triumphed. Now, after seven years of it, I am living within reach of laundries and honestly prefer to do my own 15 or 16 collars a fortnight and save laundry wear and tear.” Incidently, the most expert homelaundress I know makes her raw starch 48 hours before it is needed, using at the time only half the amount of water required and adding the remaining half —quite hot —just half an hour before the collars are to be starched. This is a very helpful bit of advice, as I found by following it exactly. A New Zealand motorist has solved the problem of carrying a baby comfortably on a long-distance run in a motor-car. From the roof of a car which arrived in Wanganui the other day was suspended a canvas cradle, and in this the baby swung comfortably above the knees of the passengers in the back seat, untroubled by bumps and lurches incidental to travel on country roads. * * * If a knob of a bed is loose, take it off and fit over the screw a piece of chamois leather in which a hole has been made. When the knob is screwed on again, it will fit tightly and give no further bother. Snip away any visible edges of the chamois from the sides.
