BRILLIANT METEOR

A watchman on a steamer anchored off Judge’s Bay last night saw a bright light in the sky near Rangitoto Island, and thinking it was a distress signal from some vessel in difficulty he communicated with the harbourmaster, the pilot boat Waitemata was sent out to investigate, but no vessel in distress was seen. Later in the evening, when the Hauiti berthed, the passengers reported having seen a brilliant meteor burst in the sky about the time the watchman reported the distress signal. It is thought that the meteor was mistaken for the rocket signal of a ship.
