ONEHUNGA BOROUGH

FINAL COUNCIL MEETING The final meeting of the old council Aas held last evening, the mayor, Mr. J. E. Cowell, presiding. The council affirmed the adoption of a by-law, making it compulsory to have the attendance of at least one member of the fire brigade present at any entertainment or indoor public gathering of over 250 persons. The responsibility in this connection is thrown upon the owner of the building concerned, the ma*nager of the gathering and the company or parties hiring the hall. Two candidates for the mayoralty, Crs. W. Coldicutt and J. E. Green, moved and seconded a hearty vote of thanks to the mayor for his services during his term of office. This was supported by several councillors, and unanimously carried. —Returning thanks, Mr. Cowell expressed pleasure at the fact that he would have the privilege of investing one of the outgoing councillors with his insignia of office when the newly-elected council assembled. Reminiscent mood brought back some rather stormy meetings that had been held, but good feelings had ever prevailed in the end. Only one real disappointment had crept into the history of the council during recent years, and that was concerning the expenditure of money on certain public works, particularly drainage. That was, however, mainly due to the lack of proper expert advice. Yet the council had not proved itself so bad a failure after all. He regretted extremely the stand taken by the deputymayor, Mr. W. N. Mclntosh, in the recent public declamations he had made as to the “enormous sums of ratepayers’ money mis-spent by the council on drainage and road work.” In the ensuing exchange of compliments between the mayor and retiring, members, also the staff, Mr. H. A. Yockley, the town clerk, came in for unusually high eulogistic comments from all round the table for his work in the past.
