NEW HEBRIDES
PROTECTING BRITISH INTERESTS (Special to THE SUN.) SUVA, April 22. To protect British interests in the New Hebrides, a commission has just made a tour of the islands which are at present under a dual administration of the British and French Governments. The report of the commission will be waited for with interest, for there are important decisions to be made. When H.M.S. Diomede arrived at Suva on April 4 the Administrator of Samoa, General Sir George Richardson, and His Excellency the Governor of Fiji, Sir Eyre Hutson, K.C.M.G., joined the warship. Sir Eyre, who also holds the position of High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, was accompanied by Mr. H. G. Pilling, secretary to the commission, and was joined later by the Australian representative, Brigadier-General Griffiths. The Diomede returned to Suva on April 22 after a fine weather trip, and during the voyage called at Port Vila, Bushman’s Bay, Tangoa, Hogg Harbour, Vila and Tanna, where there is a volcano in active eruption.
