A FINE RECORD
FORTY-TWO YEARS' SERVICE GISBORNE’S MAYOR RETIRES (From Our Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, To-day. After eight successive years as Mayor of Gisborne, Mr. George Wildish is not seeking re-election, but leaves this week for Auckland, and will take up his residence in Mount Eden. Commenting editorially upon his departure, the “Poverty Bay Herald” says: “Forty-two years is a long period of residence in any one town, and when it has been accomplished by public service of one form and another it is well worthy of recognition. Mr. Wildish, thorughout that period, has held the high ideal of service, and has been prominent in many movements for the welfare of the town, whether as a member of the fire brigade, fire board, school committe, education board, borough council, power board or other local organisations, Mr. Wildish was always regarded as a worker and put his best efforts forth for the good of the community. He was ever ready to lend assistance to every deserving cause. No job was too big or too humble for him to tackle. Many have not been able to see eye to eye with him on various matters of public interest, but no one can have denied his earnestness and good intent. Mr. Wildish has set a good example of devoted public service which all should strive to follow.” Twov years ago Mr. Wildish married Mrs. Gilmour, of Auckland, a lady who takes a keen interest in public affairs.
