FIRE DESTROYS OLD DUNEDIN BATTERY

DANGER OF EXPLOSION Press Association DUNEDIN, Tuesday. An old landmark, known as the Defence Battery at St. Clair was gutted by fire in the early morning. The firemen experienced great difficulty in the task set them to extinguish the blaze, as they had to work in a terrific heat and thick smoke in the confined space of the ammunition chamber and a tunnel under the hill. The fire had a strong hold when the brigade arrived, and it was at once seen that the old building, which was lined with heavy timber, was doomed. A shed containing small arms and ammunition alongside the battery was not damaged, but there was always present the danger of explosion through flying sparks setting the building alight.
