STOLE FOUR SHEEP
AGED SETTLER’S CRIME A FINE IMPOSED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A charge of stealing four sheep, the property of Ernest Ackerman Smith, farmer, of Rolleston, was preferred against John Charles Giltrap, aged 69, farmer, also of Rolleston, in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court today. It was stated in evidence that the two farms adjoined; that Smith had lambs running in a paddock not quite securely fenced; and that sheep and lambs did stray on to Giltrap’s land. Smith, it was stated, saw some of his lambs in a lot ready to be offered at the saleyards on behalf of Giltrap. Several witnesses expressed the opinion that Smith’s brand had been pulled or clipped off and Giltrap’s brand imposed. The sheep were inspected by the magistrate. Mr. H. P. Lawry, who held there was no doubt that wool had been clipped to remove the brands. Mr. Lawry said he would take into consideration accused’s age. He would be fined £7 10s and costs £3. The sheep were ordered to be returned to the owner.
