FAMILY ALLOWANCES
DEFENCE OF PRINCIPLE MR. SAVAGE’S ADDRESS In an address under the auspices of the Labour Party in Queen’s Theatre on Sunday evening, Mr. M. J. Savage. M.P., defended the principle of family allowances. Mr. McCready presided. Mr. Savage stated that as the basic wage was fixed by the Arbitration Court on the basis of an average family of husband and wife and two children, any additional children must be reared at the expense of the first two unless there was some increase in the incomes of the family. He made it clear that no allowances would be paid above the amount required to bring the weekly income up to £4, plus 2s for each child in excess of two. As the basic wage was in most cases fixed by the Arbitration Court at a figure in excess of £4, only a sradl proportion of the population would be entitled to the allowance.
