PLEDGED—or Not PLEDGED? Electors Judge from the Facts! Mr. Bloodworth in his speech at the Kingsway Theatre, in attempting to cloud the real issue, stated that he is a perfectly free agent, but admits that he is pledged by the Labour Party’s Municipal Policy, and nothing more. There is a good deal more to be said re pledges given by members of the Labour Party. The following will convince Electors that every Labour Candidate, Municipal or Parliamentary, is tied hand and foot to the whole platform and objective of the extreme Labour Party. * On page two of the Constitution and Platform of the N.Z. Labour Party under the heading of Membership will be found the following clause. “Persons desiring to join the Party shall, before being admitted, pledge themselves to support the Objective, Principles, Platform, and Decisions of the Party. - » » Here is the Pledge—“l hereby pledge myself to the N.Z. Labour Party to faithfully, uphold, and wholeheartedly work for its Constitution, Objective, Platform and decisions and no other.” Attempts may be made * to make this pledge apply to Parliamentary Candidates only, but a perusal of the Constitution and Rules of the Labour Party, Clause 3 Rule 10, makes it quite clear that it applies equally to Municipal, Local Body, and where possible even Candidates for School Committee. Clause 2 Rule 10 says:—lt shall be the duty of the L.R.C. to decide as to which electorates or Public bodies shall be contested in the interests of Labour, and to take full charge of the nominations and elections of all Candidates. Clause 2 Rule 11 says:—No member of the Party shall be nominated as a Candidate for any local or Parliamentary position unless duly selected as a Party Candidate. Mr. Bloodworth is the nominee of the Party, and being so he must have signed the Party’s pledge. Having done so he must adide by his pledge and loyally and wholeheartedly support the Objective— here it is:— “The Objective of the Party is the Socialisation of the Means of Production, Distribution and Exchange.” The steps toward the attainment of the Objective are contained in the Planks of the Party’s Platform. Now for the Method — j The method which the Party adopts is the conquest of political JW power, local and national, by constitutional means; the extension of the organisation of the workers in industry, together with the co-operation of all who render social service, to the end that society may be controlled in the interests of all the people. We have had recent concrete instances of the tyranny and despotism (4 Labour Caucus Rule, which has forced Mr. Lang, Prime Minister of New South Wales, against his own personal judgment into a dissolution Of his Government, and the action of the Sydney Trades Hall Council in suspending one of its Assistant Secretaries, who is also Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, for loyally carrying out the duties of his Office, in presenting an address of welcome to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York.
