BIRKENHEAD’S FALLEN
MEMORIAL UNVEILED The unveiling of the Birkenhead war memorial took place on Sunday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Mrs. D. Neal, a widow, who has long been a resident of the borough, and of whose sons were killed on active service. Addresses were given by Mr. E. G. Skeates, Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. A. Harris, M.P., Mr. J. H. McNish and the Rev. J. H. Allen. A permanent wreath of laurel leaves, executed in metal, was placed at the foot of the memorial by Miss Skeates, on behalf of the Borough Council. The choir sang appropriate hymns under Mr. J. H. Wood, accompanied by the Birkenhead Band, under Bandmaster Greg-Smith. The Rev. H. H. Bedford pronounced the Benediction, and the sounding of the “Last Post” completed the ceremony. Before the ceremony a procession of returned soldiers, Birkenhead and Northcote cadets. Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Brownies, headed by the Municipal Band, marched from the post office to the civic reserve.
