ADDITIONS TO SCHOOL
NEWTON CENTRAL BUILDING PLAYING AREAS The official opening of the new building at the Newton Central School took place yesterday, Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, officiating. There was a large attendance of pupils and parents. It was stated by Mr. Burns that the original Newton Central School was built three years ago. The cost of that building had been £12,370, and the new building was erected for £8,493, making a total expenditure of £20,863. Features of the new building were the cross lighting and cross ventilation, making it possible to at all times regulate the passage of air. Referring to the matter of open-air ■chools, Mr. Burns said the board had so far not considered them, and he was of the opinion that schools such as this one provided all the air necessary. He urged the parents to take a pride in the new school. Satisfaction was expressed by Mr. F. W. H. Brinsden that citizens were beginning to wake up to the idea that more playing areas were wanted. It was gratifying to see that the City Council and education authorities were combining to this end. •
Mr. S. Walker, headmaster, expressed the thanks of the pupils and staff to the school committee and Education Board. The playgrounds now provided would furnish practically the only open area for some distance, and he looked forward to the time when the grounds would be planted with trees and made available for the public.
