FLAT CONTRADICTION
MINISTER’S WORD DOUBTED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Replying to a deputation, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart said the Dominion possessed a most effective law for the exclusion of Asiatics. Mr. R. Groves said that 24 years ago Australia placed an absolute ban on Chinese, which showed the Commonwealth’s more effective policy. Mr. Stewart: I, personally, have seen Chinese coming down in hundreds on ships from the East. I have actually seen them being coached by the purser as to procedure in order to get into the country, and as to what streets in the towns they are to go to. Mr. Groves: I will contradict that. Mr. Stewart: Oh, well, I have seen them.
Mr. Coates (to Mr. Groves): I am afraid you cannot contradict that.
