NOT A “HOLE AND CORNER” AFFAIR
CITIZENS’ LEAGUE REPLY The Progressive Citizens’ Election League is not a “hole and corner affair/* says its secretary (Mr. F. Adeane), who briefly addressed Parnell electors last night at the conclusion of Mr. Warnock’s address. “Reports, which have not been altogether uninspired, infer that we are afraid to make public the names of members of the league,” declared Mr. Adeane, who said it was the intention of his committee to publish these names within 48 hours. “You will see for yourselves that many of these names are those of citizens who have built up the fortunes of this city of Auckland within the last 50 years, and are men who have just as great a stake in the community as you all have.” In the past the league’s nominees, he declared, had “practically been returned en bloc.” It was only right that a committee should be in existence, he said, to examine the moral and other qualifications for civic office.
