SOCCER CONTROL

CHATHAM CUP PROBLEM CHANGES IN RULES LIKELY DISCUSSION BY EXECUTIVE Faced with the prospect of there being no Auckland nominations for the Chatham Cup, last night’s meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Football Association discussed ways and means of making the competition attractive. The chairman (Mr. A. Menzies) said that North Shore and Harbour Board had been seriously affected financially by having to play in Chatham Cup matches away from Auckland. Something would have to be done in the direction of arranging the expenses of travelling clubs. Mr. Menzies suggested that each home association supervising a semi-final match should pay the expenses of the visiting team and take all the gate money. In the final at Wellington, the New Zealand Council should take all gate money and pay all the expenses of the teams taking part. Other members supported the chairman’s suggestion, and it was decided to instruct the association’s delegate to the New Zealand * Council meeting, which will be held next week, to bring forward the suggestion with a view to having some alteration made to the present rules. It was also decided to instruct the association’s delegate to test the New Zealand Council on the question of district champions only being eligible for Chatham Cup matches. The affiliation fee for the association’s mid-week competition was fixed at 10s 6d. In response to a suggestion by Mr. Harrison that some of the clubs should sponsor school teams at present without a coach, Navy Depot and Northcote offered to make arrangements to take teams in hand immediately. Mr. T. G. Wilkes was appointed grounds superintendent at Blandford Park, and was instructed to bring down a report in a fortnight. JUNIOR MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The Junior Management Committee also met last evening. Mr. G. T. Lee presided. It was resolved to start the competition from fourth to seventh grade on April 30, while the primary schools’ competition was fixed to commence on May 3. Entries were received from Mount Albert Grammar School, Technical College, St. Stephen’s College, Kowhai Junior High School and Sacred Heart College for the secondary schools’ competition.
